What is Cataract?
The lens in our eye focuses light on the retina in the back of the eye and the image appears us clear and without any distortion. Cataract formation with age leads to clouding of this lens and reduces vision of the eye. Sometimes it can occur early before age. Mostly both the eyes are affected by cataract, but in some cases condition of one eye is more serious than the other.

Mostly it causes by the change in the protein structures within our lens that happens over many years and makes the lens cloudy. In few rare cases cataract are present at birth or in early age of childhood due to hereditary enzyme defects, other genetic disease, or systemic congenital infections. Some other causes of early cataract can be severe trauma to the eye, eye surgery, or intraocular inflammation. Other causes cataract in early age can be excessive ultraviolet light exposure, exposure to ionizing radiation, diabetes, smoking, or the use of certain medications, such as oral, topical, or inhaled steroids or long-term use of statins and phenothiazines.

During the routing eye checkup, the eye care professionals may notice the early cataract development in the patient's eye even if the patient is not yet having any visual symptoms. Though clouding of the eye lens can start any age, but itis very rare before the age of 40. Patients generally observe the symptoms many years after they begin to develop. During the Surgery

During the surgery an eye surgeon will remove patient's cloudy lens. In most cases, this is replaced with a man-made, clear focusing lens. These lens are known as intraocular lens, or IOL and the procedure is known as intraocular lens implantation. The implanted lens is permanent inside the patient's eye and never degrade. This surgery mostly is a one day procedure that means the patient is free to go home on the day after the operation or in some rarer case he can stay one night in the hospital.

After Cataract Surgery

After the surgery the patient feel mild irritation in the eye. The doctor may give some pain killers for relief. Following the surgery, getting mild tears from eye is common and the eye at that time becomes sensitive to light. Wearing dark glasses can solve light sensitivity of the eye. Doctors will give some medication in the form of eye drops to aid healing and prevent infection. For a week or two after the cataract surgery eye surgeon advice the patient to avoid any strenuous activities, but the day to day normal activities are not restricted after the surgery.
